Steak dinners are always something we’re looking forward to in our house. My husband- and even some of my kiddos- work hard trying to get their steak cooking down to an art form. One of the things they’re always experimenting with is the seasoning: there are all sorts of opinions out there on the best way to season a steak. Some folks will stick with salt and pepper, but others will swear by their own secret and special spice blends and steak rubs. Recently, we think we’ve found one of our new favorites: Montreal Steak Seasoning!

Steak seasoning on a cooked steak

This Montreal Steak Seasoning makes for a great default or go-to steak spice or burger seasoning. Everything is perfectly balanced and nothing is going to overpower your meat. It all works together to enhance the flavors of your steak or beef while also adding just a bit of heat with some peppers and warmer spices. The best part about making this Homemade Montreal Steak Spice is that you can tweak and change it to your liking. You can use coarser ground spices and some seeds to get the same texture of the McCormick’s Montreal Steak Seasoning or mix up a powder. You’ll love this stuff- don’t be surprised when you find yourself adding it to all your steaks!

What’s in Montreal Steak Seasoning?

Here’s what we used in our recipe. Start here and mess with the amounts if you want! Maybe you want some extra dill or you like your seasoning extra peppery- experiment and find what blend works best for you!
  • Salt & Pepper – Go with some good sea salt and some freshly-cracked pepper for best results.
  • Onion Powder – Experiment with using onion powder or dried minced onions.
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Coriander
  • Garlic Powder – Again, see how it tastes using garlic powder versus dried minced garlic.
  • Paprika
  • Dill Weed – Or maybe some dill seed?
Outside of these ingredients, there’s a number of different spices and seasonings that people have added. Consider things like subbing red pepper flake in for the cayenne, using smoked paprika, et cetera.

How to prepare your Steak Spice

Mixing up your Montreal Steak Spice is as simple as adding your ingredients to a mixing bowl and whisking together. Once combined, store in your preferred container and keep in the spice cabinet. For ease of use, we’d recommend finding some sort of shake to keep it in.

If kept right, your homemade spice mix should taste fresh for 1-2 years before it starts to lose flavor and potency. Don’t worry though- we’re certain you’ll work through this stuff quick! Hope you enjoy!

How to use Montreal Steak Seasoning

Like we previously mentioned, this Montreal Seasoning is a great all-purpose spice blend for any steak you can think of. It would taste great on anything from ribeyes to roasts. It’ll also work with most cooking methods: sear up a steak on the stovetop or grill one out on your grill. You can even make a Montreal Steak Marinade with your spice mix: add some of the seasoning to some water, oil, vinegar, and soy or Worcestershire sauce. Let your steak marinate for at least 15 minutes before cooking it up- tastes delicious!
