How to make BBQ Pork Chops

Cooking your BBQ Pork Chops on the grill is such an easy job! For this easy barbecue recipe, here’s all you’ll have to do:

Process to make pork chops on the grill.
  1. Prep homemade BBQ sauce if making from scratch and set aside. Mix together garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper and use to season both sides of pork chops.
  2. Set pork chops on grill over medium to medium-high heat and cook for 3 minutes before turning over. Baste tops and sides of pork chops with BBQ sauce.
  3. Let cook another 6 minutes before turning and basting with BBQ sauce again. Cook another 6 minutes before transferring to plate and letting rest under foil for 5 minutes. Serve with more BBQ sauce.

Substitutions

Out of an ingredient? Here’s a few substitutions that you can use to make this recipe.

  • BBQ Sauce – Again, if you don’t have any barbecue sauce left in your fridge or pantry, it’s super easy to make BBQ sauce from scratch! Just check out that link we left in the ingredients section: it’ll take you to our 3 ingredient recipe.
  • Seasonings – We added in a few common seasonings for a little extra flavor in our pork chops. Feel free to skip on the garlic and onion or even the salt and pepper if you’re out- the BBQ sauce should work enough on it’s own.
  • Pork Chops – A lot of the ideas in this recipe can be used for more than just pork chops! If the store is out of boneless or bone-in pork chops, just use whatever cut sounds best to you: just adjust the cook time as necessary for thicker or thinner cuts of pork.

Variations

Want to mix things up and make these BBQ Pork Chops even tastier? Here are a few ideas to help spice things up.

  • BBQ Sauce – The BBQ Sauce is really a star player in this Barbecue Pork recipe. Subbing in a different store-bought or homemade barbecue sauce can totally change the recipe- give it a try!
  • Seasoning Blend – We went real simple with our pork chop seasoning but you can also experiment. Add in a few extra spices or maybe use your favorite BBQ pork rub.
  • Protein – Who says you have to stick with pork chops for this recipe? We’ve kept things simple enough that you could cook up all sorts of proteins this way: why not make some BBQ Chicken with these exact same steps?

Storage / Freezing

Storage: Let your pork cool down to room temperature before putting in a resealable container or bag. Kept in the fridge, your pork chops should keep for 3-4 days- 5 if you want to push it.

Freezing: You can also try freezing your pork chops after you’re done cooking. Kept in a freezer bag or container in the freezer, your Barbecue Pork should stay good for about 3 months.

Top tip

FAQ

Do you have questions about this recipe? Here are the answers to the most commonly asked questions for this recipe.

What temperature should I grill BBQ pork chops at?

Preheat your grill to medium or medium-high heat (around 375). This temperature will help to sear the pork quickly and lock in the juices.

Should I oil the grill before grilling pork chops?

It’s best to oil the grill grates before grilling pork chops to prevent the chops from sticking. Use tongs and a folded paper towel soaked in vegetable oil to lightly oil the grates. Be cautious of flare-ups when adding oil to a hot grill.

How do I know when the pork chops are done?

The best way to ensure the pork chops are cooked thoroughly is by using a meat thermometer. Insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the pork chop without touching the bone. The pork chops are safe to eat when the internal temperature reaches 145. However, if you prefer your pork chops with a touch more doneness, you can cook them to 160.

Should I let the pork chops rest after grilling?

Yes, it’s important to let the pork chops rest for a few minutes after grilling them. This will allow for the juices to redistribute within the meat, resulting in a juicy and flavorful pork chop. Let them rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

Can I use BBQ sauce while grilling pork chops?

Absolutely! Adding BBQ sauce to pork chops during grilling gives them a delicious coating with tons of grilled flavor.
