White Pizza Sauce

I’ll be honest, I’m a big fan of pizzas with white sauce. For the longest time, my experience with pizza sauce was limited to the red, tomato kind. Tangy, herby, and a bit of sweetness- it seemed like the one, perfect pizza topping that couldn’t be replaced. Then I tried some White Pizza and, ever since, my love has been split between these two delicious sauces. While I’m not saying this White Pizza Sauce is going to be replacing the classic kind any time soon, I will say you’re definitely going to use it more than once!

Where regular pizza sauce uses tomatoes, this easy white sauce instead uses bechamel and cheese. While you obviously lose those enjoyable flavors that come from the tomato- the tang, the touch of acid- you get creamy flavors in return! We made up the batch here and immediately put it all to use for a few pizzas the whole family enjoyed.

Sauce Ingredients

  • Butter
  • Flour
  • Milk
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Oregano
  • Garlic – We used minced garlic but you could always use freshly-chopped or pressed. In a pinch, you might even be able to use garlic powder!
  • ParmesanFreshly grated works best but it should work even with pre-grated parmesan.

Ingredients for White Sauce

How to make White Pizza Sauce

Prep for our pizza sauce is very easy! To make it, all you’ll need to do is…
  1. Melt your butter in the bottom of a saucepot before combining it with flour to make a roux.
  2. Turn your roux into a bechamel sauce by slowly streaming in milk.
  3. Season your sauce with salt, pepper, oregano, and garlic before removing it from the heat and melting in the parmesan.

Grating fresh parmesan

As the saying goes, “first, you make a roux.” To make a roux, you start by melting some butter in the bottom of a pot or saucepan. Melt it until it’s nice and foamy.

Butter added to pan

Once that melted butter starts getting bubbly, we can add in our flour. Mix it in until no dry clumps remain and the roux has come together into a cohesive mix.

Flour added to melted butter

Let that cook for a couple of minutes before streaming in your milk. Add it in slowly and, ideally, let it come up to room temperature before adding it in. Stir or whisk the sauce together constantly as you add in the milk.

Milk added for béchamel

Let that sauce cook for a bit until it’s smooth and consistent. Once we’ve reached that stage, we can whisk in our salt, pepper, oregano, and garlic.

All that’s left is the cheese. Add your parmesan to the sauce and cut the heat. Now you’re going to whisk until the parmesan is fully melted and incorporated.

Cheese added to cream sauce

With that, the sauce is done! Grab some Homemade Pizza Dough and fix yourself up a pie. Understand that this sauce is different from regular, tomato-based pizza sauce- it’s not going to taste the same. It still works with all sorts of classic pizza toppings though! Serve up with some chicken or pepperoni, all your favorite veggie toppings, and hit with a bit more mozzarella before baking and enjoying.

Isn’t this the same as Alfredo Sauce?

Not exactly. Alfredo sauce is typically made much more creamy- usually with something like heavy cream or half & half. You might call White Pizza Sauce a sort of Alfredo pizza sauce- very similar. Since it’s thinner than Alfredo sauce, our pizza sauce isn’t going to soak into or ruin any pizza dough.

How long does White Pizza Sauce last in the fridge?

While most store-bought pizza sauces will last up to a week in the fridge, this freshly-made sauce should probably be enjoyed within 5 days. We would not attempt to freeze it- dairy and cheeses don’t freeze well and, because of all the flavor changes, it’s usually not worth it…
