I discovered this French Onion Soup Rice recipe a few years back. It’s an old school recipe that is also known as “stick of butter rice”. There are a few variations that have floated around. But, I think my version is the BEST.

Canned French Onion soup adds a ton of flavor to this rice casserole. It can be served with as a side dish or some even choose to enjoy it as a main dish. Every single time we make this stick of butter rice, my family devours it. Most of the time, I double the recipe.

Our Rice dish with French Onion Soup is perfect for a potluck recipe too. As a matter of fact, it’s great for holiday dinners like Thanksgiving and Christmas. I quite often pair it with Filet Mignon for a Christmas Dinner side.

Ingredients for French Onion Soup Rice

Our French Onion Soup Rice is a quick 4 ingredient recipe that uses some fride and pantry staple ingredients. You’re probably going to have all of these ingredients on hand already but, if not, you should be able to find them all at your local grocery with no problems. Here’s all you’re going to need:

Ingredients for French Onion Soup Rice
  • Rice – We imagine that any sort of long grain white rice should work in this recipe, so use whatever basmati or jasmine rice you have sitting around. You can try using short grain rice or brown rice, but you’ll have to adjust your cooking times. Just make sure you’re not using any sort of instant rice here.
  • Canned French Onion Soup – We used this Campbell’s French Onion Soup that you can find at most grocery stores. If you had any leftover Slow Cooker French Onion Soup sitting around that might work as well!
  • Beef Broth – Or beef stock or beef consomme- whatever you have on hand.
  • Butter – a whole stick makes this rice with soup so incredibly tasty.

See recipe card for quantities.

Storage / Freezing

Storage: If you haven’t eaten it all up already, you’ll want to save that leftover Rice with French Onion Soup. Let cool and transfer your leftovers to a ziploc bag or an airtight resealable container. Keep in the fridge for 3-4 days.

Spoon with french onion rice.

Freezing: You can also try freezing French Onion Soup Rice. Follow the same procedure as before but make sure you’re using a freezer bag or freezer-safe container and keep in the freezer. This should stay safe to eat for 3-6 months, but you’ll want to enjoy as soon as possible for best taste and texture. Let thaw in the fridge before reheating.
