Why you’ll love this pie recipe

  • Caramel, chocolate, nuts- these are all flavors that play off of each other and together so well! There’s tons of desserts that use these flavors and this is one of the best.
  • Making this pie from scratch is so much better than purchasing Turtle Cream Pie from the frozen section at the local grocery. You can add as much chocolate, caramel, and nuts as you like to your own homemade pie!
  • A lot of these ingredients are staple ingredients you probably already have on hand. Pair that with how quick this recipe comes together and you’ve got the makings of a delicious and easy dessert!

Ingredients

Our Turtle Creme Pie Recipe uses plenty of classic homemade dessert ingredients- you probably have more than a few of these sitting around already! To make this tasty no bake pie from scratch, you’ll need the following:

Ingredients to make Turtle Pie.
  • Oreo Pie Crust – If you ever seen our easy Oreo Pie Crust recipe, you’ll know how easy it is to make it from scratch! You just need Oreo cookies and butter. You could also use a store-bought Oreo pie crust too if you like.
  • Heavy Cream
  • Cream Cheese – Let this get to room temperature before you use it.
  • Caramel Sauce – We used this Hershey’s Caramel Topping but any similar runny caramel product should work. I have a great recipe for Easy Carmel if you would like to make it from scratch!
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Chocolate Syrup – We’ll top our Turtle Pie with this along with our leftover caramel sauce.
  • Whipped Cream – Go with freshly whipped or just use something like Reddi-wip.
  • Pecans

How to make Turtle Pie

It’s so easy to prepare this no bake pie from scratch- if you’ve ever made a no-bake cheesecake, you can sort of think of it like making Turtle Cheesecake. To make up this delicious dessert recipe, here’s what you have to do:

Process of making no bake pie.
  1. Prepare an Oreo pie crust by combining crushed oreos with melted butter and pressing mixture into greased pie pan. Set in fridge for 30 minutes.
  2. Beat cream cheese until fluffy before adding in some caramel, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth and combined before folding with heavy cream that has been beaten to stiff peaks.
  3. Evenly spoon finished pie filling into chilled pie crust before topping with caramel and chocolate syrup drizzles. Garnish with dollops of whipped cream and pecans before setting in fridge for 6 hours.

Substitutions

Just ran out of an ingredient or can’t find it at the store? Here’s a few substitutions that you can use to save this Turtle Pie recipe!

  • Oreo Crust – Once again, if you don’t have any store-bought Oreo Pie Crusts on hand, you can easily make them from scratch with the ingredients we mentioned. If you can’t get your hands on Oreos, normal chocolate wafers will work in a pinch. All else fails, settle with something like our No Bake Graham Cracker Crust– it’s less chocolate-y but better than nothing.
  • Heavy Cream – If you can’t get your hands on heavy whipping cream, you’re not out of luck yet! In a pinch, you could sub in some frozen whipped topping like Cool Whip- let that before using.
  • Pecans – We have these pecans in the recipe as a garnish, so they’re sort of optional. You could sub in all sorts of different nuts but the best pecan substitute is probably going to be walnuts.

Variations

Want to mix things up and make this pie even tastier? Here are a few ideas to help.

  • Chocolate Turtle Pie – You can think of what we made as Caramel Turtle Pie, since we added caramel to the pie filling. You could easily make this pie more chocolate-y by using a quality chocolate sauce instead of caramel when you’re making the pie filling.
  • Turtle Pecan Pie – We went with a simple pecan garnish for our pie but some people like to go heavy on the pecans. Top your pie with a layer of crushed pecans, make a sort of pecan pie crust, add some crushed pecans to the pie filling- experiment and tell us how it goes!
  • Pumpkin Turtle Pie – If you happen to have some canned pumpkin sitting around, you can try adding some to your pie filling. Consider subbing the Oreo crust out for a graham cracker crust instead- the flavors will work together better.

Storage / Freezing

Storage: When you’re finished with your Turtle Pie, you can either keep it whole or divide it into portions before putting in the fridge. Try to enjoy within 3-4 days after you finish making it.

Freezing: When you’re done enjoying your Turtle Dessert, you can toss it into the freezer where it’ll keep frozen for quite a while! Either keep whole or divide into servings before wrapping in foil and keeping in the freezer for 1 month- 2 months if you don’t mind a little texture change.

Top tip

Be sure to never over beat the heavy whipping cream. Only beat until stiff peaks form. Over beating will cause the whipped cream to collapse.
