My family loves KFC. We are a large family. With prices on the rise, we have enjoyed fast food less frequently. I try to make healthier versions of our restaurant favorites at home. In the past we have made a CopyCat KFC Chicken Pot Pie Recipe. Recently my kiddos KFC favorite it the KFC Famous Bowls with popcorn chicken.
KFC use to make their Famous Bowl Recipe with popcorn chicken. They have now switched the recipe to the chicken nuggets that do not taste as good. This was one of the main reasons I decided it was time to throw together our own KFC Bowl Recipe.
As I mentioned, making a Homemade KFC Bowl is so simple. You can use homemade ingredients or store-bought convenience items to make this a super quick and easy dinner. Layer on additional cheese or gravy if you like. KFC never seems to add enough, if you ask me.
KFC Bowl Casserole Ingredients
You’re going to love this KFC Bowl Casserole recipe- it’s an easy 5 ingredient recipe and the perfect way to use leftover chicken and mashed potatoes! Even if you’re not using leftovers, it’s a forgiving recipe and you can sub in all sorts of canned or frozen ingredients instead. Here’s all you need:
- Mashed Potatoes – Most mashed potatoes will work here. You can use instant mashed potatoes, leftover mashed potatoes, or make up some of The Best Mashed Potatoes for your casserole.
- Corn – Again, you can use whatever corn you’ve got handy: frozen corn, canned corn, or freshly cooked corn. Just remember to drain off any excess liquid if using frozen or canned.
- Chicken – We cooked up some frozen popcorn chicken from the store, but you could make this casserole recipe work with any cooked or leftover chicken. You could use a store-bought or Slow Cooker Rotisserie Chicken or make up some quick Air Fryer Chicken Breasts. Just break any bigger chunks down into bite-sized chicken pieces.
- Cheese – Cheddar or sharp cheddar will work out just fine here. For best melting, use freshly-shredded cheese. Bagged cheese will not be quite as tasty.
- Gravy – Any sort of chicken gravy- either jarred gravy or homemade gravy will work perfectly fine here.

KFC Bowl Recipe
What’s great about these CopyCat KFC Bowls is that they come together and cook real quick. Since we’re using already cooked leftovers and ingredients, it’s mostly just layering the casserole and letting the oven do it’s job. To make this tasty Famous Bowl Casserole for yourself, here’s all you have to do:
- If you haven’t already, prepare the mashed potatoes and cook your chicken before setting aside. In the bottom of a 9×13″ casserole, spread a thick layer of your mashed potatoes. On top of that, spread an even layer of corn.
- Cut your chicken down into bite-sized pieces if needed before spreading an even layer of chicken pieces on top of the corn. Transfer to an awaiting 400 degree oven and let bake for 15 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and evenly top the KFC Bowl Casserole with shredded cheese.
- Return casserole to oven and let bake another 5 minutes to melt the cheese. Warm up gravy in the microwave or on the stovetop. Once cheese has melted, pull casserole from the oven and top with warm gravy.
- Scoop out a generous serving of your finished Famous Bowl Casserole and top with extra gravy if you’d like.
Storage / Freezing
Storage: Our KFC Bowl Recipe should hold up pretty well in the fridge if you have any leftovers. Transfer leftover casserole to an airtight container and keep in the fridge. Expect it to last around 3-5 days.
Freezing: You can also try freezing KFC Casserole if you want longer-term storage. Wrap the casserole in plastic wrap and aluminum foil or transfer to a freezer-safe container. Keep frozen for 2-3 months. For best results, reheat in the oven.
