I quite often make unique dip recipes to enjoy for our potlucks. This Italian Hoagie Dip is an appetizer that most everyone wants to try first. Most everyone loves an Italian Sub so, it disappears quickly.
If you need other dip recipes, consider making my 7 Layer Taco Dip or a Fried Dill Pickle Ranch Dip that are perfect party appetizers.

I am sure you are thinking this Italian Sub Dip is sort of odd. Trust me.. it’s delicious. It’s a deconstructed hoagie that can serve a crowd. All of the delicious flavors found in an Italian Hoagie served with bite sized bread pieces or served inside a bread bowl.

I grew up loving Italian Hoagies from a locally owned deli. Hoagies are an item that I am quite picky about. The bread has to be just right, the dressing needs to have flavor and the ingredients need to be fresh. Are you a picky sub person too?

Italian Hoagie Dip Ingredients

We wanted to whip this Hoagie Dip up with all sorts of classic Italian sandwich or Italian hoagie ingredients. If you had a sandwich dinner night recently, you’ll probably have more than a few of these sandwich ingredients sitting around. Here’s everything you’re going to need:

Italian Hoagie Dip ingredients
  • Ham – We’d recommend getting a nicer ham from a deli counter. A tasty freshly-sliced black forest ham will make this Sandwich Dip taste so much better!
  • Pepperoni – We had these bigger pepperonis sitting around but you could easily get away with using small pepperoni slices.
  • Salami
  • Provolone – Like with the meats, you’ll want these to sliced like you would for sandwiches.
  • Lettuce – Just your preferred kind of lettuce for sandwiches. We’ll be chopping and dicing this all pretty fine.
  • Banana Peppers
  • Tomatoes
  • Onion – We like red onions here- they taste pretty good in a cold dip recipe like this.
  • Seasonings – We just went with dried oregano and basil. You could also try using something like a homemade Italian Seasoning.
  • Red Wine Vinegar
  • Olive Oil
  • Mayonnaise

You’ll also want something to dip into your finished Sub Dip. We’d recommend some slices of Italian bread here, but you could also just something like crackers. I often serve this Cold Italian Dip in a bread bowl, it’s great for presentation.

How to make Hoagie Dip

Sliced pepperoni on a cutting board.

Making this Italian Hoagie Dip is pretty straight-forward: you’ll chop up your ingredients, whip up a dressing, and mix it all together. Sounds easy, right? Here’s all you’ll do:

  • If you haven’t already, you’ll want to get your ingredients chopped and sliced. Take your slices of meat and cheese and slice them into bite-sized pieces– around 1/4″ big. Chop your lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, and onion and dice down into tiny pieces.

  • Set all those aside and start on the dressing. Add the basil, oregano, vinegar, oil, and mayo to a small bowl. Stir together well until blended and then set aside.

  • If you haven’t already, add all your chopped meat, cheese, and veggies to a large bowl. Give those a quick stir to combine before adding your mayonnaise dressing and stirring to coat and mix. Serve up with your sliced bread and enjoy.

Storage / Freezing

Storage: Your Hoagie Dip will taste best the day you serve it up. Still, if you have some leftovers, you can transfer them to an airtight container and keep them in the fridge. It’ll stay safe to eat for 3-5 days, but ingredients like the lettuce might get soggy and unpleasant before then.

Freezing: We highly recommend you do not freeze this dip. Diced veggies- especially veggies like lettuce- do not freeze and thaw very well and we can’t guarantee the dressing will hold up either. Just enjoy as much of this dip as you can and just accept that you’ll have to throw away any leftovers you don’t finish.

Tips for the BEST Hoagie Dip

  1. Consider skipping ingredients you know will get soggy/wet quicker if you’re making this ahead of time. Your tomatoes might weep some moisture and get ingredients like your lettuce soggy and unpleasant.
  2. Mix things up and add in all sorts of other tasty sandwich ingredients. Alternatively, feel free to take out ingredients you don’t like on your own sandwiches.
