We love whipping up all sorts of tasty dip recipes- especially sweet dessert dips! Creamy dips like our Cool Whip Fruit Dip is great but when you need to satisfy your chocolate cravings, this Chocolate Dipping Sauce is perfect! Since the dip only requires 3 ingredients and a few minutes of time, it’s great when you need a last minute dessert appetizer.

What we’ve made here is sort of like a Chocolate Ganache Dipping Sauce- it’s a simple but delicious blend of chocolate and cream. Served up warm, this makes it a great Chocolate Sauce for dipping fruit, pretzels, Nilla cookies, or even as a Chocolate Churro Dipping Sauce! If you don’t feel like using it as a dip, it’ll also work as a chocolate drizzle for ice cream or on the top of other desserts- sort of like our Chocolate Fudge Sauce or Homemade Caramel Sauce.

Why you’ll love this Milk Chocolate Dipping Sauce recipe

  • We really can’t oversell just how easy this chocolate dipping sauce recipe is! It’s a 3 ingredient recipe- a 2 ingredient recipe if you drop the salt- that’s so simple to make up on the stovetop.
  • Since it’s such a simple sauce, it pairs well with just about anything. Serve it up with some Mexican Churros or some fruits. I am sure most everyone will agree it’s perfect for dipping strawberries.
  • Once your Chocolate Sauce is melted and mixed together, it’ll keep for quite a while. Expect it to last weeks in the fridge and months in the freezer… if you don’t enjoy it all before then!

Ingredients for chocolate dipping sauce.
  • Chocolate Chips – We used some of these semisweet chocolate chips from Guittard. Feel free to use any of your other favorite chocolate brands like Nestle or Ghirardelli chocolate chips
  • Heavy Cream
  • Salt – Don’t worry about the salt: it’s not going to make your chocolate taste salty or anything like that. Like with a lot of dessert recipes, a tiny pinch of salt can really help improve all the other flavors!

How to make Chocolate Dipping Sauce

Chocolate chips, heavy cream and salt in a sauce pan with a blue spatula.

Once you’ve raided your fridge and pantry for all those ingredients, you’re ready to start your fruit dipping Sauce! Here’s all you’ll need to do:

  • You’ll want to start by adding all your ingredients to a medium to large saucepan. Give a quick stir to combine and then cook over low heat. The lower and slower you cook, the better.

  • Stir the chocolate cream mixture constantly while it cooks over low heat. Once your chocolate melts completely, remove the chocolate sauce from the heat, mix to combine, and transfer to a serving bowl. Serve warm.

Substitutions / Variations

We think our Chocolate Dipping Sauce recipe is pretty good as-is: easy to make, simple ingredients you probably have already, and so tasty too! Still, if you need to make some substitutions or want some ideas to make an extra tasty Chocolate Dip, give these ideas a try:

  • Chocolate Chips – You don’t have to use semisweet chocolate for this recipe or even use chocolate chips! You could follow this same recipe to make a Dark Chocolate Dipping Sauce or a White Chocolate Dipping Sauce too. You could also make Chocolate Sauce from chocolate bars- simply sub in around 6 ounces of chopped chocolate for the 1 cup of chocolate chips.
  • Heavy Cream – If you want to make our dessert dipping sauce without heavy cream, feel free. Using heavy cream keeps the end sauce really rich and creamy but you can get away with using half and half or even milk if you’d like. Just note that using lower fat milk will make the end sauce thinner, so consider using a 3/4 or 1/2 cup of milk in place of heavy cream to make it thicker.
  • Other Ingredients – Since we’ve made this a real simple recipe, there’s plenty of room to add in other ingredients to make it even tastier! Try adding in a bit of vanilla extract, melted butter, or even a bit of extra sugar next time and see what flavors you like. If you want a chocolate dipping sauce that hardens, you could try a little trick from our Peanut Butter Eggs: add a bit of shortening or coconut oil to make something more like chocolate hard shell.

Storage / Freezing

Storage: Since our Chocolate Dipping Sauce is pretty close to a chocolate ganache sauce, it’ll hold up really well! Even stored covered at room temperature, it can last 1-2 days- but you’re better off keeping it in the fridge. Keep refrigerated for 1-2 weeks and warm up in the microwave or on the stovetop before serving.

Freezing: You can also try freezing chocolate sauce like this if you want long-term storage. Allow your chocolate dipping sauce to cool completely before transferring to a freezer-safe bowl or container. Cover and keep frozen for up to 3 months and allow to thaw in the fridge before reheating.

Recipe Tip

Be sure to cook on very low heat and stir constantly.
