I reach for our CrockPot so frequently during the fall and winter. Having quick and easy dinners are a must when I am tight on time. This Slow Cooker Chicken BBQ (also known as Pulled BBQ Chicken) is a recipe that I have been making bunches over the last few years. My family devours it when I make it for dinner.
I typically serve the BBQ Chicken on a hamburger roll then have potato chips and pickle for the side. It’s GREAT with Homemade Coleslaw too!

Inexpensive dinners are becoming more popular in our home right now. Beef prices are on the rise so, I have been leaning on some of my past frugal meals. This chicken dinner recipe is one that is included in my meal rotation because it is quite inexpensive to make. I hope you add it to yours as well.

Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken Ingredients

A big upside to this Slow Cooker BBQ Pulled Chicken recipe is that you can keep it simple, ingredients-wise. You can get away with making this as just a 2-ingredient recipe- but we’ve got a few suggestions for extra ingredients too! Here’s what you’re going to need:

Ingredients for BBQ chicken in Crockpot.
  • Chicken Breasts – Chicken breasts are going to be the easiest cut of chicken to use for this recipe. You’re more than welcome to use chicken thigh instead of chicken breast, if thats what you prefer- just remember to add extra cooking time. Whatever you pick, aim for boneless and skinless chicken for easy cooking.
  • BBQ Sauce – This is a great place to use something like our 3 Ingredient BBQ Sauce recipe! Of course, you can also use your favorite BBQ sauce from the store if you already enjoy the flavor. We love this Montgomery Inn barbecue sauce that’s a big favorite near us.

You’re also more than welcome to add some sort of chicken seasoning before you fire up your crock. Add in some garlic or onion powder, some paprika, chili powder, salt, and/or pepper. You can even sneak in some of our Copycat Hidden Valley Ranch Mix to make a Slow Cooker BBQ Ranch Chicken!

How to make BBQ Chicken in Slow Cooker

Our Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken is just like almost any other slow cooker recipe: no-fuss, quick, and easy! Since there’s so few ingredients, there’s no real dicing or cutting ingredients. To make this BBQ chicken yourself, here’s all you need to do:

  • Add your chicken breasts directly to the slow cooker. For best results, let thaw completely and maybe pat away any excess moisture.
  • Pour barbeque sauce over the chicken. If adding any other seasonings, add them in here. Optionally stir to coat- it’s not totally necessary.

  • Put lid on CrockPot and set it to cook. Cook on high for 3 hours or cook on low for 6. If using chicken thighs, cook on high for 4 hours and cook on low for 8.

  • Once chicken is fully cooked, use a pair of forks to shred the chicken and toss it in the sauce. Add in any extra sauce if you would like, keep warm, and enjoy! BBQ Pulled Chicken is best enjoyed on a butter bun with a couple of spicy pickle chips.

Storage / Freezing

Storage: Storing leftover chicken is pretty straight-forward. Let your CrockPot BBQ Chicken cool to room temp before transferring to a resealable bag or container. It should keep for 3-4 days- 5 if you want to push it a bit.

Freezing: Freezing your leftover BBQ chicken is another option if you need long-term storage. To freeze it, let cool completely before moving to a freezer-safe container, like a freezer bag. Squeeze any extra air out before sealing and keeping in the freezer for 3-6 months.
