I have always been a fan of those containers of cheese spread that you can find in the refrigerated section at the grocery store. Lathering a cracker with the thick cheese is always a tasty snack. Have you tried those handy little packs of cheese and crackers? You know, the ones for the kid’s lunchboxes? Yea, I love those too!

Pub Style Beer Cheese Dip

This Pub Style Dip is similar but with an adult twist. We add beer and a bit of spice to make it much better than those store-bought varieties. It can be quickly assembled and requires no cooking or baking.

Typically when you think about cheese dip, you are picturing a gooey, creamy type. As I noted above, this dip is more of a spread. It’s very cheesy flavored, just not the same texture. It can be slightly heated on the stovetop if you prefer it a bit creamier.

Easy Beer Cheese

First, let’s discuss the beer. What beer is best for this Beer Cheese Dip recipe? You can use almost any variety you have on hand. But, whichever you choose will dictate the flavor profile of your dip. I used a simple Budweiser because that was in my beverage drawer. If you should use a dark beer, it will taste quite a bit different than mine.

If you would like to leave out the beer, you could consider using an apple juice or cider. You will not have a beer flavor but will still be super tasty! It’s an excellent option for keeping the dip non-alcoholic and kid-friendly.

Next, the cheese! I used a brick of unshredded extra sharp cheddar. It’s what I had on hand. I was worried the flavor profile might not be as good as an upscale Wisconsin or Vermont Sharp. I was wrong. The inexpensive store brand worked fine.

I would suggest not making this Beer Dip with pre-shredded bagged cheese. The results will not be the same. Shred the cheese yourself, and the dip will be so much better.

For the spice, I add a bit of Cayenne pepper to kick the dip up with a little bit of heat. I am sure you could use some finely diced jalapeno peppers or even some liquid smoke. I will stick with the Cayenne because I thought the flavor was perfect.

How to Make Beer Cheese Dip

Making the dip is so easy. We toss the cheese and spices into a food processor.

Next, we slowly add the room temperature beer. A little at a time in between pulses will give the best consistency.

Beer being added to cheese dip spread

If you plan to serve warm, add the mixture to a saucepan over low to medium heat and stir constantly. For cold beer cheese dip, I refrigerate for at least two hours. The chilling allows the cheese spread to absorb some of the flavors.

What to serve with Pub Style Beer Cheese Dip?
Serve with pretzels or crackers. They are both great for dipping and spreading. Also, vegetables, soft pretzel bites or small bread slices would work.

  1. Is there a better beer for this recipe than others? That’s probably a dumb question but just thought I’d ask. TIA!

  2. Hi Jen,
    I don’t have a pulse attachment. I have a KitchenAde Artisan mixer & blender.
What should I use for the pulsing?

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Judi! If you do not have a food processor, go ahead and pop it in your blender. Give it a few pulses, most blenders should be strong enough to get the cheese mixed. I hope that helps and be sure to let me know if it works well for you. Happy holidays!
