Dinner Rolls
Yeast bread is always so easy to make. And these homemade dinner rolls are no exception. I make them every holiday, especially for Thanksgiving and Christmas with Whipped Cranberry Butter.
Everyday meals are never complete without a warm bread option. Homemade Dinner Rolls are delicious with Beef Stew, Broccoli Cheese Soup, and Baked Ziti. Serve them with just about any meal, because everyone will love them.
I often make a batch or two of Easy Dinner Rolls for slider sandwiches. I use them for Ham and Swiss Sliders, Dr. Pepper Pulled Pork and Leftover Thanksgiving Dinner Sliders. They are so versatile.
You can knead the yeast dough by hand or use a stand mixer to do all the work for you. I make them with and without my Kitchen-Aid, most of the time by hand. Kneading the dough the old-fashioned way with your hands is not difficult at all.
I have found this to be the is the easiest dinner roll recipe that I have ever made. For years, I was intimidated by the extensive process of bread making. After making this easy recipe, there is no fear.
This particular dinner roll recipe has a little bit of sweetness. I like my rolls sweet but not overly sweet. If you prefer more sweetness, add a bit more sugar.
Homemade dinner rolls are so incredibly delicious, especially when they are warm and topped with a pat or two of butter. For breakfast, they are tasty with a layer of jam. But, they are fantastic as is fresh out of the oven.
Ingredients to Make Dinner Rolls
- Active Dry Yeast
- Vegetable Oil
- All Purpose Flour
- Sugar
- Butter
- Egg
- Milk
- Salt
How to Make Dinner Rolls
To make dinner rolls first, you will need to beat an egg in a small bowl and set aside. Then, add the yeast, sugar, oil, and water to a large bowl or stand mixer and mix to combine. Let the yeast mixture sit until it starts to bubble (bloom).
Next, whisk in the beaten egg, salt and softened butter.
For the following step, add small amounts of flour at a time until the dough is no longer sticky. Then knead the dough by hand or with a dough hook attachment for the stand mixer. By hand, work on a floured surface. Knead for about 7-9 minutes. With the stand mixer about 4-5 minutes. You can watch this Youtube Video for how to knead the dough if you are unfamiliar with the process.
I usually preheat my oven to 400 degrees at this point.
Next, we will separate the dough into 18 dough balls. Place the balls in an ungreased baking dish or on a baking sheet. Then, cover with a kitchen towel, plastic wrap, or parchment paper.
We now will let the rolls rise (doubled in size), which typically takes about as little as 30 minutes. I find it is usually around 45 minutes. It’s best to use a warm place. I like to put them on top of my oven that is preheating.
After the rolls have risen, brush the tops with milk and bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown.
You will find that this recipe is quite simple, and you will find yourself making these soft dinners rolls again and again.

I don’t usually have milk in my fridge. Can I brush with something else? A beaten egg? Thanks!
