Muddy Buddies on a spoon

Muddy Buddies are sort of like trail mix’s sweeter cousin who’s more fun at parties. The base is usually a cereal like Rice Chex which is then usually tossed in some sort of powdered, sugar-y mixture. Add in a bunch of other fillings that you like and- there you have it: Muddy Buddies. I’ve had a few of the most popular flavors, but I’ve found this strawberry flavor is my favorite!

I also like to call this stuff by its other popular name: Puppy Chow. It’s always so much fun, making this stuff and giving it out to folks and telling them they’re enjoying some homemade Strawberry Puppy Chow. Haha! Whatever you like to call this recipe, we know your family will love it!

Ingredients for Strawberry Puppy Chow

How to make Muddy Buddies

This recipe is super easy- all you’ll need is a microwave and large plastic bag. To make your Muddy Buddies…
  1. Mix some melted chocolate and Rice Chex until well-coated.
  2. Toss your coated Chex cereal with your powdered sugar and cake mix.
  3. Add in your candies, fruits, and other mix-ins.

Strawberry cake mix and powdered sugar in a zippered bag

Put your sugar and cake mix in a large, sealable plastic bag and give them a quick shake to combine them before setting aside. Add your chocolates or melting candies to a microwave-safe bowl and place in the microwave. You’re going to heat them in 30 second intervals, mixing between until your chocolates have melted nice and smooth.

White Chocolate added to Chex Rice Cereal

Gently stir together the melted chocolate and your Rice Chex cereal until the cereal is coated and saturated with the chocolates. This is going to get them nice and sticky before we toss them into the bag with our powdered ingredients.

Chocolate covered Chex Cereal added to strawberry mix

After tossing your Chex into the bag, seal it up and give it a good shake. Shake until the cereal picks up the sugar and cake mix and forms a powdered coating.

At this point, the base of your Muddy Buddies is done! While you could serve it as-is, it looks a little… boring. So take the time to add in some mix-ins like we listed above. They’ll add plenty of color and flavor to your end-product.
