One pot meals are perfect for busy weeknights. Our Cheesesteak pasta is made in a skillet, not baked. So no oven is needed. There’s no need cook the noodles or veggies ahead of time. It’s a quick and easy recipe with less mess and easy kitchen cleanup.
Do you have picky eaters? You can omit any of the items that your family may dislike. My husband loves to add mushrooms and banana peppers to his Philly Cheesesteak Pasta. My kids dislike onions and peppers but still love this recipe.
Philly Cheesesteak Pasta Ingredients
What’s great about Philly Cheesesteak Pasta is that it’s easy to make with leftover veggies, meat, and pasta that you have sitting around. Pair that with some fridge and pantry staples, and you’ve probably got a lot of these ingredients on hand already! If you’re missing anything, here’s all you need:
- Bell Pepper – We used a green bell pepper for this recipe, but you can use any bell pepper for Philly Cheesesteak recipes. Red bell peppers are more sweet and fruity than green, while orange and yellow are somewhere between. In a pinch or short on time? Use a store bought frozen onion and pepper blend.
- Onion – A white or yellow onion will work here. Just avoid purple or red onions.
- Ground Beef – This is a great recipe if you have any leftover ground beef sitting around! Any ground beef will work, but aim for 80/20 ground beef or leaner.
- Garlic – Minced garlic from the jar is okay.
- French Onion Soup Mix – You’ll usually find this sold by Lipton. We used this Beefy Onion Soup Mix. If you don’t have soup mix packets handy, check if you have the ingredients for our Copycat Lipton Onion Soup Mix and use that instead.
- Beef Broth
- Worcestershire Sauce
- Milk – Whole milk, skim, fat-free, or any other non-dairy milk substitutes should all work here.
- Pasta – We used large elbow macaroni, but there’s plenty of different pasta shapes that will work for Cheesesteak Pasta. Others have used everything from penne to rotini.
- Provolone Cheese – We used sliced provolone for convenience sake: it’s what we had on hand. You can also use shredded mozzarella or even both cheeses if you’d like!

How to make our Philly Cheesesteak Pasta Recipe
Making this Philly Cheesesteak Pasta Recipe is so simple- it’s an easy one pan or one pot recipe that cooks quick! You can make it even faster if you’ve got precooked ground beef or cooked pasta already. If you’re making it from scratch, here’s what you’ll do:
- Prep your veggies before you get started. Over on a cutting board, trim your bell pepper and peel your onion. Dice both and set aside.
- Set a large skillet over medium heat and brown off your ground beef. Once thoroughly browned and crumbled, drain off any excess fat and then add in your diced onion, diced pepper, the soup mix packet, and garlic.
- Now we start adding the liquids. Add in the Worcestershire sauce and beef broth. Briefly stir to mix in.
- Next, add in the milk and stir once again.
- Bring the mixture up to a boil before adding in the dry pasta. Mix pasta in and reduce the heat down to low. Cover and let simmer for 10 minutes or until the pasta is tender.
- Once your cheese steak pasta finishes cooking, uncover and remove from the heat. Cut or tear up your provolone slices into smaller pieces and add to the pan. Stir in until fully melted before serving.
Storage / Freezing
Storage: You’ll want to save whatever Philly Cheesesteak Pasta you don’t eat- it makes for great leftovers! Transfer the leftover pasta to an airtight container and keep it in the fridge. Expect it to last 4-5 days.
Freezing: You can even try freezing Cheesesteak Pasta if you have leftovers. Let cool completely and transfer to a freezer bag or freezer-safe container. It should keep for 2-3 months- let thaw completely in the fridge before reheating for best taste and texture.
Tips for the BEST Philly Cheesesteak Pasta
Try using mozzarella instead of provolone if you prefer it. For the best of both worlds, use both cheeses and maybe even double the amount of cheese!
