Ground beef dinners are some of my go-to recipes. I can feed my crew relatively inexpensively. But, I frequently forget to thaw my ground beef and I am then left with finding an alternate dinner. This usually results in ordering carryout food, lol. I have been experimenting with many different Instant Pot recipes like Instant Pot Ribs and Instant Pot Corn on the Cob. I also find this Instant Pot Frozen Ground Beef recipe to be one of my favorites.

It’s so simple to cook frozen ground beef in the Instant Pot. No need to babysit the defrost timer on the microwave any longer. I am sure you could cook thaw frozen ground beef in a slow cooker but, that can take all day long. I mainly use this easy recipe so that I can prepare taco meat, stuffed peppers or ground beef casseroles.  Cooking the ground beef in the pressure cooker speeds up the process for dinners when all I have is frozen meat on hand.

How to Cook Frozen Ground Beef in the Instant Pot

First, place a trivet in the bottom of the pressure cooker and add 1 cup of water. The trivet is necessary because it keeps the meat from overcooking on one side. This method also keeps the meat from cooking in all of the fat. So, thawing ground beef in the Instant Pot results in a healthier meal. I typically cook 3 pounds of ground beef at one time but, you can make one or even two pounds as well. Always use just 1 cup of water, even when cooking 1, 2, or 3 pounds of meat.

As you can see, there will be lots of grease in the bottom of the pot. I drain as much of the fat as I can before removing the meat. If only one pound is on the trivet and can be lifted easily, go ahead and drain the grease after removing the meat.

For three pounds of ground beef, I cook on high pressure for about 30 minutes and use the manual release. I will notice some pinkness at first but, as the meat is chopped, it continues to cook and lose the pink color. If you are unsure if your meat has cooked enough, insert a meat thermometer to check for at least 160 degrees.
