I mentioned that this rainbow fruit salad is great for gatherings. You can make it ahead of time which can be so helpful. I suggest adding the citrus dressing just before serving. You can just give it a quick toss to coat with a serving spoon.

The Best Fruit Salad Ingredients

The ingredients for fruit salad are really simple, since you just need to grab whatever fresh fruits you want and enjoy! We picked out what we think are the best fruits for a classic fruit salad but you’re more than welcome to sub in your favorite fruits wherever you think they’ll fit best. For our Fruit Salad Recipe, here’s what you’ll need:

Fresh fruit salad ingredients on a sheet pan.
  • Strawberries – ripe and bright red if possible.
  • Pineapple – You can save a lot of time and prep by buying pre-cut pineapple chunks or wheels. You’ll still end up chopping these down into smaller, bite-sized pieces but breaking down a whole pineapple can be time-consuming!
  • Kiwis
  • Oranges – We went with these mandarins, since they’re a lot smaller and need a lot less prep. You can just peel your mandarin oranges and break them into their natural orange wedges.
  • Blueberries – Easiest fruit prep of them all! No need to slice or dice anything here.

That’s all the fruit salad ingredients you’ll need. We’ll also whip up a quick and easy fruit salad dressing as well. For that, you’ll need:

  • Honey
  • Lime Juice – Bottled lime juice should be fine here, but your better bet is going to be fresh lime juice. Feel free to add some zest from the lime to your dressing to kick the flavor up even more.

See recipe card for quantities.

How to make Fruit Salad

If you don’t mind a bit of fruit prep, making fruit salad from scratch is really easy! Even our quick 2-ingredient salad dressing comes together without a lot of hassle. If you need a few visuals to help you out, here’s our recipe:

  • Remember to wash and dry your fruit before prepping. Peel kiwis, mandarins, and hull strawberries before cutting larger fruits into smaller bite-sized piecesquartering is a good place to start. Place prepped fruit into serving bowl or mixing bowl if you plan on adding fruit salad dressing.

  • To make fruit salad dressing, grab measuring cup and add honey. If using fresh limes, consider rolling on countertop with the heel of your palm to get more juice from your limes. Whether using fresh or bottled lime juice, add to measuring cup with honey and whisk to combine.

  • Pour salad dressing over fruit. Gently toss to coat, making sure you don’t toss too vigorously or mash fruit up. Serve immediately or cover with plastic wrap or transfer to airtight container and store in the fridge for later.

Storage / Freezing

Bowl with fresh fruit with dressing.

Storage: While your Homemade Fruit Salad is safe to eat for the next 3-5 days in the fridge, you’ll get the best taste and texture before the 3 day mark. After 3 days, fruits like strawberries and kiwis start getting soft and a bit mushy. On the plus side, our delicious dressing should help keep the fruits from browning too quickly thanks to the lime juice!

Freezing: You’ll want to avoid freezing fruit salad recipes like this one here. When fruits freeze and thaw out, they get extra mushy and don’t make for good fruit salad anymore. Save the frozen fruit for smoothies and keep leftover fruit salad in the fridge.

Tips for the BEST Fruit Salad

  • Choose fresh ripe fruit that is colorful and in season.
  • Cut all fruit into uniform bite sizes.
  • Add lime zest and or mint for an additional level of flavors.
  • For the freshest flavor and texture, add the dressing just before serving.
