Appetizer smokies with bacon wrap

While those Lil Smokies are so good on their own, it’s so easy to upgrade them with all sorts of other ingredients. Obviously, we went ahead and bacon-wrapped them but they needed something a little extra on top of that. So we whipped up a simple spiced sugar mix that adds a nice mix of sweet and spicy flavors. Hope you enjoy these Brown Sugar Smokies- we certainly did!

Ingredients for our Lil Smokies Recipe

  • Little Smokies – The go-to pick here is the Hillshire Farms Lil Smokies.
  • Bacon – Don’t go with the thin, microwave stuff. Use something you’d probably pan fry or oven bake.
  • Brown Sugar
  • Paprika
  • Cayenne Pepper – Use more or less depending on the amount of heat you want.
  • Black Pepper

Ingredients to make Little smokies recipe

How to make Little Smokies

First, prep our baking sheet by lining it with some aluminum foil and spraying with cooking spray. Set that aside and, in a shallow dish, combine our spiced sugar ingredients. Whisk together the sugar, paprika, caynne, and pepper and then set aside.

Spices for little smokie sausages

With our spices and sugar mixed, we can focus on the smokies themselves. Remove your little smokies from their packaging and pat them dry with a paper towel. After that, prep your bacon slices by cutting them into thirds- as they are, they’re too long to wrap around the smokies.

Drying little smokies

With our bacon slices cut short, we can now bacon wrap our lil smokies. Wrap the bacon around each smokie before securing the bacon by poking a toothpick through. Now give your Bacon Wrapped Smokies a quick toss and roll through our spiced sugar mix. Once coated with sugar, transfer to our prepared baking sheet.

All that’s left is to let these smokies bake in the oven. Let the oven warm up to 350 degrees before tossing our sheet of smokies in to cook.

Bacon wrapped sausage appetizers

It should only take around 20 minutes for our smokies to be cooked through. Instead of pulling them right after that 20 minutes was through, we decided to broil our smokies for a bit of an extra crisp. Watch them closely while they’re under the broiler- your smokies will start smoking up quick if you’re not careful! Once they’ve crisped up to your liking, pull them from the oven and let them cool for a little bit before enjoying.
