Salisbury Steak Ingredients
We tried to keep our recipe simple for all the picky eaters you might be cooking for. There’s plenty of substitutes and modifications you can make that we’ll list here as well! We liked the way The Pioneer Woman kept a similar recipe simple, so we took some inspiration from her.
For our ground beef patties, you’ll need…
- Ground Beef – We prefer a lean ground beef for this recipe. It’ll help your patties hold together much better! If you have any dietary concerns, mixing or substituting the beef with ground turkey is fine.
- Bread Crumbs – We usually use breadcrumbs but we’ve seen all sorts of substitutes here! Experiment with rice, stovetop stuffing mix, crackers, or even oats.
- Ketchup
- Mustard – Dijon mustard is an interesting substitute to try here.
- Worcestershire Sauce
- Garlic Powder & Onion Powder
- Salt and Pepper
Our gravy, meanwhile, is going to use…
- Brown Gravy Mix Packets – Alternatively, you could make this recipe with our Easy Brown Gravy!
- Ketchup
- Worcestershire

We’ve also made a video for this recipe, which we’ve pasted just below! Check it out!
Variations for this Salisbury Steak Recipe
- You can top your steaks with all sorts of veggies. Caramelize some onions with your patties or saute some mushrooms to go with them! Some of our crew loves mushroom gravy.
- There are plenty of other additives you can add to the gravy as well! Try substituting one of your gravy packets out for your favorite soup mixes- maybe use our Copycat Lipton Onion Soup Mix Recipe?
FAQs about Salisbury Steaks
There are many different reasons for steak patties not holding together or staying shaped perfectly. One reason would be the fat content of the ground beef used in the recipe. If you’re remaking this recipe and have noticed your patties tend to fall apart fairly easy, you might want to crack an egg into your meat mixture.
Note that one pound of ground beef will make about 4 hamburger patties.
Hamburger steak usually only contains salt and pepper, whereas Salisbury steak adds fillers.
The main difference is in the way it is shaped and cooked. Salisbury steak is formed into patties and cooked in a skillet. Meatloaf is formed into a loaf in a loaf pan and baked.
Tips for Making the Salisbury Steak
- Use your hands – This is as easy as dropping all of our patty ingredients into a mixing bowl and mixing it all together with our hands. Don’t even try to stir with a spoon!
- Don’t worry about the shape – If they are oval patties or round, they taste the same.
- You can make the patties ahead – Form patties and place in an airtight container and place in freezer.
- Cook on both sides until all the pink is gone – if you want to be extra safe, probe your patties with a food thermometer to check for doneness at around 160 degrees.
- Garnish with freshly chopped parsley for a finished look.

This is a great meal. Also makes for a great meal prep. I made the patties and frozen and put in a freezer bag with the instructions also included the rest of the ingredients and gave it to my daughter to have as a meal or 2 aftershe had her baby.
Very nice! Very flavorful! I added 1 t. beef bouillon, as i always do for beef meals. Just makes it beefier. Thank you so much!
Can I add my gravy to find next time? I love your recipe but prefer my gravy in your Salisbury steak; 4TBSP pan drippings, 4 level TBSP flour, 2 cups water, 1/2 tsp Gravy Master, 1/2 tsp Bouillon boullion base. Cool drippings and flour for minute, slowly add water, add rest and whisk till thickened . I understand if you don’t want mine on your post. Thank you.
I am definitely going to try your gravy
Recipe. Sounds wonderful.
I will worry about the calories later. Lol.
I’m definitely going to make your gravy, thank you.
Haven’t had Salisbury Steak in years, but this is what I remember, very good saving this recipe.
This turned out perfect! Thank you so much. My family loved it and it honestly looked just like your pictures. The kids wanted seconds, and that’s not normal here. I have picky eaters, so this was a complete Homerun!!!
Thank you so much!
Can this recipe be doubled?
It sure can:) I hope you enjoy.
I never realized salisbury steak was so easy to make at home. Pinned this to try out. Thanks for sharing such a delicious looking recipe. #HomeMattersParty
This reminds me of my childhood. I haven’t made it in years. Thanks for sharing. I am definitely giving it a try. I am happy to feature your great recipe at Love Your Creativity. Happy Sunday.
I made this last night and the recipe was very easy, and delicious! I used stuffing mix instead of regular bread crumbs and added mushrooms to the gravy and it was so good, but I ate too much, because I just couldn’t stop! I will, definitely, be making this more often! Thank you for such an easy, and tasty, recipe!
Love, love, love this recipe!!! I make it all the time! It is super easy and super yummy! Thanks so much!
Just as the others said, this was DELICIOUS! Made just as the recipe said. I might add mushrooms next time, but it’s not necessary. The ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings added to the gravy really took the flavor up a notch. Much better than regular Salsbury Steak gravy. To the lady that made the sarcastic comment about using chemicals to make the gravy, she obviously didn’t see your link to a homemade version. As for me, my time is valuable, so I want a much easier recipe on occasion. (And I used an organic brown gravy mix anyway.)
To be honest, I hate cooking so it is easy for me to get stuck on the same dinners every week. I made this and it was so simple. I followed the advice of other commenters and bought low sodium brown gravy mix and added an egg and it turned out great. 100 times better than those banquet meals with salisbury steak!
I use many online recipes and very few, by themselves, are good enough outcomes for me to happily add my comments. Third time this month I made this and tonight it took as long as the mash potatoes were cooking. And, every time this recipe is perfect. No changes needed. Thank you!
to make mashed potatoes quicker I use the instant pot ! so much easier than waiting for them to boil which takes forever!

My family is very picky eaters(husband,12 year old,14 year old boys, 20 year old daughter.) They beg me to make this a couple times a month. So this recipe get 5 stars from me!
I made this today and it is so easy and so so so yummy. My patties fell apart and was kinda mushy. i will use more filler next time. This will be added to my favorites. Quick and easy doesn’t hurt either. Thank you for the great recipe.
Delicious and simple to make!!
Great comfort food! 💕
This is the best salisbury steak recipe I have tried. The burgers stay together and the taste is excellent
I made this for dinner tonight and I have to tell you Jen that it was soooo simple and absolutely delicious!!!! I’ve made this type dish many times using many ingredients. But this is by far the most yummy!!! I even used your brown gravy recipe and that was magic!!! I served it with rice and green beans. Winner-Winner!!!! I will definitely make this for a Sunday dinner with the kids and grandkids!!! Thank you!! I’m going to find youon IG so I can keep up with you.!!!
Love , Love, Love this recipe. My family loved it. Very easy for a weeknight meal. I was needing to feed about 7 so I had to just bake my patties on a sheet pan. Just based them a few times with the gravy. Also mixed 1/2 Bison with 80/ 20 beef. This is a new family favorite. Thank you.
This is hands down the best I’ve ever tasted in my life. My whole family loved it.
Love this recipe, easy and so good on a cozy fall evening.
I’ve made this several times and it is fantastic. I’ve never added the egg but I will next time since I have a hard time keeping my patties from falling apart.
First time making it … Huge hit
I missed the part with the egg in it, but I don’t think it was needed.
Great recipe made it last night & the family loved it. Definitely in the rotation recipe file. :) I didn’t see any place in the recipe that called for an egg, where was that, maybe I missed something.
