If you are needing a last minute July 4th Dessert idea, this DIY Ice Cream Cake Recipe would be perfect! I never realized how easy it is to make your own ice cream cake at home. Purchasing store bought ice cream cakes can be very pricy. Have you seen the price on them lately? Some can cost $20+. that’s crazy. We are having a July 4th grill out and I decided that a Patriotic Ice Cream Cake would be a perfect dessert to serve this year.
DIY Ice Cream Cake Recipe
Making your own DIY Ice Cream Cake at home only requires a few ingredients. The main ingredient to a Homemade Ice Cream Cake is Ice Cream Sandwiches. Yup…. they make a perfect ice cream cake.
We made our DIY Ice Cream cake with Red, White and Blue for the holiday. Obviously you can make your own homemade ice cream cake with any color combinations you choose.
I purchased my ice cream sandwiches at Aldi as they are always quite cheap. Be on the lookout for a sale to have your homemade ice cream cake be very cheap. Just grab yourself some wafers, pudding and some Cool Whip to make this simple dessert.
INGREDIENTS
12 Ice Cream Sandwiches
16 oz Whipped Topping (like Cool Whip)
1/4 cup crushed Vanilla Wafers
1 box Instant Vanilla Pudding
DIRECTIONS
Mix 8 oz whipped topping, pudding and crushed cookies until well mixed.
Divide in half and add red food coloring to one and blue to the other half.
On a tray small enough to fit in the freezer, stack 4 ice cream sandwiches.
Top with blue topping making sure not to go over outer edges.
Top with 4 more sandwiches.
Top with red topping making sure not to go over outer edges.
Top with 4 more sandwiches.
Cover and ice with other container of whipped topping.
Place in freezer for at least 2 hours.
Slice and serve.
My hubby was talking for days how good this DIY Ice Cream cake was. I think he told every neighbor and friend, ha ha. The kiddos enjoyed it but WOW the hubby polished off most of this homemade ice cream cake all by himself.
As you can see, just layering on your layers is all there is to making a DIY Ice Cream Cake. Perfect for birthdays, baby showers, July 4th or any holiday!
