- They are GREAT for an Ice Cream Party.
- We picked the tastiest Banana Split toppings to give you the Best Banana Split Recipe!
Banana Split Ingredients
Before we get to how to make a Banana Split, you’ll need to get your hands on a few ingredients. Thankfully, you’ll be able to find all of these ingredients at any grocery store or supermarket. Here’s all you’ll need for this dessert recipe:
- Ice Cream – We usually go with the 3 classic ice cream flavors: vanilla ice cream, chocolate ice cream, and strawberry ice cream. If you’re a big fan of neopolitan ice cream, you’re gonna love this recipe!
- Sauces – Feel free to go all out and top this with all your favorite ice cream toppings. For the best Banana Split, use store-bought or homemade Pineapple Sauce, Chocolate Fudge Sauce, and Strawberry Topping.
- Banana – You’ll want to aim for a bit of a sweet spot when it comes to picking the right ripe banana for Banana Splits. If it’s underripe it won’t be sweet enough to work for this dessert recipe but if it’s overripe it’ll be too soft and mushy to work with.
- Whipped Cream
- Maraschino Cherries
- Chopped Nuts – You can usually find bagged chopped nuts at the store. You can also chop or crush nuts yourself if you prefer.
See recipe card for quantities.
How to make a Banana Split
- Start by adding a scoop of each ice cream flavor into whatever you’re serving your sundae up in.
- Next, you’ll want to top each of your ice cream scoops with different sauces. Add strawberry topping to the strawberry ice cream, chocolate syrup to the chocolate ice cream, and pineapple topping to the vanilla ice cream.
- Split a peeled banana in half lengthwise and set each half on either side of your sundae. Top each ice cream with a small dollop of whipped cream and add a cherry to each dollop. Sprinkle nuts over finished sundae and serve while it’s cold.
Our Tips for Making Banana Split Sundaes
- Feel free to use your favorite toppings for your own dessert. Experiment and see if you enjoy adding fresh fruits like strawberry and pineapple, other sauce like Homemade Caramel Sauce, or other fun toppings like Oreos and gummy worms.
- When you’re adding your toppings, remember to pair the sauces and ice cream correctly. We really like pairing the chocolate sauce with the chocolate ice cream, the strawberry topping with the strawberry, and the pineapple topping with the vanilla. Of course, you can also mix these around and see what flavor combos you like.
- Enjoy your Banana Split while it’s fresh and cold. If you take too long, you’ll be snacking on a bowl of melted ice cream, sauces and mushy bananas!
- If you don’t finish your dessert, you can keep the leftovers in the freezer. This is also a good way to prep multiple banana splits: pop it into an airtight container that’s freezer-safe and keep it in the freezer. They’ll keep for a good few months this way- make sure you let them thaw and soften up a bit before serving if you’re keeping your Banana Split frozen.

I always thought that Banana Split was named after the city of Split, lol. Now I finally get it: It’s because of the banana split in two pieces. It looks great, thank you for sharing.
