Boiled Chicken Wings are an amazing shortcut for easy Buffalo wings. Finish in the oven or air fryer for crispy baked chicken wing every time! Toss in your favorite wing sauces and serve up with blue cheese or ranch dressing.
It’s no secret that I love crispy chicken wings, especially when we need game day appetizers or watch party snacks. Years ago before spending more time in the kitchen, I use to fry our buffalo wings just like they do in the restaurants. One of my first chicken recipes I shared here on my blog was my shortcut with making Boiled Chicken Wings.
Boiled chicken wings ensures you’ve got perfectly cooked wing. You can enjoy them with seasonings with no baking if you are not looking for a crispy wing. We toss them in the oven or Air fryer for crispiness.
Whatever the case, Boiled Chicken Wings make for one of the easiest chicken wings recipes. There’s no hassle with deep frying chicken and using a bunch of oil and there’s plenty of ways to spice up your wings before and after baking them. Of course, like any chicken wing recipe, you can also toss these in whatever wing sauce, my favorite is Homemade Buffalo Sauce or a 3 Ingredient BBQ Sauce. Follow along with our recipe for perfect crispy boiled chicken wings every time!
Why you’ll love this easy Boiled Chicken Wings recipe
- While we all love crispy fried chicken wings, not all of us can deep fry at home easily. Making Boiled Chicken Wings and finishing them in the oven or air fryer allows anyone to have delicious crispy chicken wings at home!
- Boiling and baking chicken wings is way more cost effective and cheaper than using up tons of oil for deep frying. Instead of wasting several cups of oil, you can just put a big pinch of salt in with some water and cook your wings up this way.
- Boiling wings is much healthier than deep frying. So, those watching their fat content can still enjoy a delicious wing.
- Making wings at home is just as good as ordering chicken wings from out. The air fryer or oven will get them just as crispy as any fried chicken wings, you can season them perfectly, and toss them in as much wing sauce as you like!
Boiled Chicken Wings Ingredients
To make our Chicken Wing recipe, you’re really only going to need a couple ingredients. You’ll need some other stuff depending on what chicken wing flavors you’re wanting to make, but to make some chicken wings from scratch, here’s all you need:
- Chicken Wings – Make sure you cut apart the wings and the drumettes before starting this recipe. You can also boil chicken wings from frozen if you want!
- Salt – Any plain salt will work here, we’re just trying to make some salted water for boiling chicken.

How to make Boil and Bake Chicken Wings
There really isn’t a whole lot you gotta do to make our Boiled Chicken Wings- if you want easy chicken wings, it’s definitely one of the best recipes! For Boil and Bake Chicken Wings, here’s what you’ll do:
- Add salt to a large pot of water and bring to a boil. Carefully add your chicken wings to the pot and let boil for 9 minutes. If boiling frozen chicken wings, consider boiling for twice as long.
- Once you’ve finished boiling chicken wings, remove from the pot and pat dry with paper towels– The drier your wings, the crispier they’ll get in the oven. Set on a wire rack on a baking sheet and consider adding seasonings.
- Transfer chicken wings to an awaiting 450 degree oven. Let bake for 25 minutes before turning chicken wings over and letting bake another 15 minutes. Toss baked chicken wings in preferred wing sauce while they’re still warm and enjoy.
Substitutions
It’s kind of hard to come up with substitutions for a 2 ingredient recipe like our Boiled Chicken Wings- you can’t really sub anything out without affecting the end product too much. Still, if you’re having trouble sourcing some of these ingredients, here’s a couple of substitute ideas:
- Chicken Wings – If you want to stick with other cuts of chicken, try going with some smaller drumsticks if you can find them. Chicken drumsticks are still pretty tender and packed with flavor- they might even be a little cheaper too if you find a good deal. Outside of chicken, if you want some sort of vegan chicken wing substitute, try going with some baked cauliflower wings.
- Salt – Really, any non-flavored salt will work for boiling chicken wings. Use kosher salt, iodized salt, sea salt- you don’t need to be picky here!
Variations
We kept things simple with Boiled and Baked Chicken Wings so that you can finish them as whatever chicken wing flavor you want! If you want a few ideas for how to finish your homemade chicken wings, here’s some you can try out:
- Buffalo Wings – Can’t go wrong with the classics! To make some Homemade Buffalo Wings, just make some of our Homemade Buffalo Sauce and toss your baked chicken wings in that. Serve your wings up with a side of blue cheese dressing or ranch.
- Garlic Parmesan Chicken Wings – Here’s another popular chicken wing flavor you can find. Consider seasoning your boiled chicken wings with some garlic powder and some herbs before baking. Melt something like our Easy Garlic Butter Spread for tossing your wings in and top with some shredded parmesan and extra herbs.
- BBQ Chicken Wings – For something a little sweeter, try going with some Barbecue Chicken Wings. Grab your favorite barbecue sauce or whip up some 3 Ingredient BBQ Sauce and give your wings a quick coating before baking them.
Storage / Freezing
Storage: When you’ve had your fill of Wings, you’ll want to keep your leftover chicken wings in the fridge. Transfer leftovers to an airtight container or ziploc bag and keep in the fridge. Like most cooked chicken, your wings will last around 3-4 days.
Freezing: For best results when freezing chicken wings, we’d recommend skipping out on any sauces and just transferring the baked wings to a freezer-safe container. Your frozen chicken wings will keep in the freezer for around 4-6 months. Let thaw in the fridge before reheating in the oven or in an air fryer.
Recipe Tip
Cut down the prep time by purchasing store bought frozen party chicken wings.
If tossing the boiled and baked chicken wings in sauce, do that when fresh out of the oven.

Amazing recipe… We made these wings today and will be making these again, they were the best wings we made at home!
Nevermind…found online..whoa, I’d put him in the hospital! Lol
Not familiar with Frank’s Red Hot, but before I look, does it have cayenne, in it? I have a family member who is allergic to cayenne, but not other peppers.
Hi! I noticed you used the original Frank’s hot sauce. Can I use the kind that is thinker like ketchup? Thanks!
Hi Cindy! You could give it a try. I really love the flavoring and consistency that the Frank’s Red Hot has. Frank’s is what most wing houses use as a base. If you try the thicker sauce be sure to let me know how it turns out.
How many servings does this recipe feed? Or I guess approximately how many small wings does it yield?
So I tried these lovely wings but the sauce wouldnt really stay on so I let them cool of first . Other than that they were great.
Are the wings frozen when you use them?
Hi Sherry! This bag was frozen when I dropped them into boil. I watched for them to appear done and checked for no pink. These were the smaller wings. If you have larger sized wings you will want to boil for longer. I hope you enjoy them as much as we have. The kiddos made me make another batch, lol. i think I will be keeping RedHot in business.
