My mom made this recipe many times when I was growing up. I understand why it frequented her recipe rotation. To make it requires poking the chicken with a fork, marinating, and then baking. So easy for a weeknight dinner!

The Italian Dressing Chicken marinade is a bottle of your favorite brand dressing. I prefer Kraft Zesty Italian or the Wishbone brand. But, you could use a store brand or even a homemade version.

Any piece of chicken will work for this recipe. Consider using thighs or breasts. We always have chicken breasts in our freezer so, I use them most of the time.

How long should you marinate chicken?

It’s best to marinate for 6 to 8 hours. But, you can leave the chicken in the marinade for up to two days. You risk it going bad any longer than that.

Is marinating the chicken required?

No, I have made this recipe for Italian Dressing Chicken many times without marinating. It’s still super tasty.

How long will cooked Italian Chicken last?

If you have leftovers, go ahead and place them in an air-tight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days. If you prefer to freeze the leftovers, they will last for about two months.

Can I freeze the uncooked chicken and marinade?

Yes, this chicken recipe is great for a freezer meal. You can store the uncooked chicken in the Italian dressing for a few weeks.

Can I grill marinated Italian chicken?

Absolutely! I have used this chicken recipe for grilled chicken often. I always discard the marinade and am sure the chicken reaches proper temp. The results are amazing also.

Ingredients to Make Italian Dressing Chicken

  • Chicken
  • Italian Dressing

Recipe For Italian Dressing Chicken

First, poke the chicken on both sides with a fork. If you forget this step, it will not be an issue. I find that poking the chicken allows more of the marinade to seep in and give more juice and flavor.

Next, place chicken into a zipped bag. Then, pour the Italian dressing on chicken. Now, put in the refrigerator to marinate for at least 30 minutes. If you have time, it’s best to let it sit for 6 hours or so. This recipe works well without marinating too!

When ready to bake, add the chicken along with the marinade to an oven-safe baking dish. Bake for about 45 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 165 degrees.

  1. I add potatoes and onions to the chicken as it marinates but usually bake it in a separate pan because the potatoes might take longer to bake than the chicken. I have also baked in the same pan and put the potatoes back in if needed. Even adding carrots is a great addition!

I love this recipe as my family uses this all the time. I usually only grill the marinated chicken. However I ran out of propane and was looking for my next option. So thank you for sharing! If anyone is looking for a good zesty Italian dressing/marinated, try the northern itialian lite dressing and marinate by kens steakhouse. You can get it at any grocery store, where you find the dressings. I promise you it’s delicious!

Can I use a boneless/skinless chicken thigh instead of chicken breast? Also should I cover the chicken with aluminum foil while baking?

  4. Did you say I can pour the marianade on the chicken that I’m baking in the oven? You mean the marianade that’s already in the ziploc bag?

    1. I haven’t made this yet, but I will! Also, I’m thinking you do NOT cover it before baking as the chicken looks like it was browned/golden and looks like it wasn’t covered.

This is one of our go to grilling recipes! I laughed when I saw the bottle of Wishbone Italian dressing because it’s the best Italian dressing to use as a marinade! We’ve tried many! I never thought to bake it…thank you for the idea.

  6. Thank you for this! I’ve used Italian dressing as a marinade before, but never thought to use it in the oven. I’ve pinned this!

Thanks so much for joining the Grace at Home party at Imparting Grace. I’m featuring you this week!

    1. Oops! Getting that fixed right now. You will set the temp to 350 degrees. Thanks so much for letting me know it was forgot:)
