Chocolate covered Christmas Oreos are so easy to make! The recipe only requires 3 ingredients, are fun to make, and are a festive addition to Christmas cookie boards, exchanges or gift giving. I’ll show you how to decorate them with a simple chocolate Christmas tree.
Having quick and easy Christmas Cookies is sometimes the best during the busy holiday season. When you do not have time to mess with mixing and baking cookies this idea for decorated Christmas Oreo Cookies is a lifesaver. Everyone loves Oreo Cookies and they are not difficult to dip with chocolate and then decorate with a fun Christmas tree.
If you are looking for other easy Christmas treats make my Oreo Truffles or Chocolate Covered Ritz they’re great holiday treats that can be made quickly.
Making Chocolate Covered Oreos for Christmas is as simple as dipping the cookie in melting chocolate wafers or chips, allowing just a bit of drying time before decorating. Instead of a full-dip, we went with Half-Dipped Oreos to get that sort of “snowy field” look on each of our Oreo cookies. With a piping bag and a steady hand, we were able to make a bunch of cute green trees to go on top of each cookie.
Throw a star on top of each tree and a chocolate sprinkle for a tree trunk and you’ve got a cute little Christmas Tree Oreo that you decorated in no time at all! Serve them up at your next Christmas party, include them with your homemade cookie boards, or add them to your Christmas cookie Tins or boxes to gift.
Christmas Oreos Ingredients
In terms of ingredients, this is pretty much a 3 ingredient recipe. All you need is some Oreo cookies and a couple varieties of melting chocolates. If you’re a big homemade dessert maker, you might even have the sprinkles and candy stars on hand already. If you would rather use my Cookie Icing That Hardens Recipe. it would work too. Just note, they will take much longer to set/dry. These are the ingredients you need:
- Oreo Cookies – Or, of course, any sort of store-brand or off-brand Oreos you can find at the store. Consider using the green mint flavored Oreos for flavor and festive color.
- White Melting Chips – We went with these Ghirardelli White Melting Wafers. They’ve got a bit of added vanilla flavor to them.
- Green Melting Wafers – If you go to Michaels, you can find these sold under brands like Sweet Tooth Fairy Meltables or Wilton Melting Chips can be found at many stores and also on Amazon.
These are the three main ingredients you’ll need. For decoration, you’ll also want to grab some sugar candy stars and some optional chocolate sprinkles or jimmies. These will serve as the star on top of the Christmas tree and the trunk respectively.
See recipe card for quantities.
How to make Decorated Christmas Oreo Cookies
Making Christmas Oreos isn’t hard at all- sort of like making some Half-Dipped Oreos with a little extra creative flair. To make some yourself, here’s what you do:
- Add white melting chips to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second intervals until melted, stirring in between. Half-dip each Oreo into melted chocolate and set on parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Add green candy melts to separate bowl and similarly microwave in 30 second bursts, stirring in between. Transfer to a ziploc or piping bag and cut a small opening in the bottom corner. Tip: All tall cup is great for holding your bag when transferring the melted chocolate.
- Draw green trees onto each half-dipped oreo using a back and forth motion. Using tweezers or a steady hand, top each tree with a candy star and use chocolate sprinkles to make tree trunks.
Storage / Freezing
Storage: When it comes to storing your Christmas Oreos, it’s not too different from storing leftover Oreos. Once your chocolate coating has set, feel free to transfer your Holiday Oreos to an airtight container. They’ll keep for a good 3-4 weeks at room temperature- no need to refrigerate!
Freezing: If you want long-term storage, then you’ll want to freeze them. Keep them in an air-tight and freezer-safe container and set in the freezer. Expect them to keep well for up to 3 months. Let thaw in the fridge before enjoying.the freezer for up to 6 months, but enjoy within the first 3 for best taste and texture.
Tips for the BEST Christmas Oreos
- If you prefer to use white chocolate chips for dipping and decorating, you will need to add a tsp of shortening to your chips. They will take a bit longer to harden. You will also need to add green good coloring.
- Be creative and go with a few different designs on the tops of the Oreo Cookie.
- Go ahead and do a full dip of melted chocolate to cover the Oreo if you choose.
- If your melting chocolates seem a bit thick, melt in a small amount of shortening to thin the chocolate.
- Use a piping bag or a zipper bag with a tiny corner cut off for decorating.
