Homemade Onion Strings (straws) - super flavorful, crispy, and addicting!

Homemade Onion Strings

Ok… onion rings are one of my favorite foods. I guess I could say that anything with onion as the main ingredient rates high on my list of favorite foods. If we hit Outback Steakhouse, I could devour a blooming onion all by myself for a meal. If onion rings are available at any restaurant, I usually sub out my fries.

My kiddos on the other hand are not the fan of onions that their momma happens to be. My oldest loves onions but all of my boys can have a meltdown if onions are located in their food. Crazy boys! I have tried to cut back on our eating out this past month. We are wanting to buy a new home next year and our eating out budget has been through the roof lately. So I plan to make more home cooked meals to save some money.

Homemade Onion Strings (straws) - super flavorful, crispy, and addicting!

I was craving onion rings last week and I almost lost my control. I was so close to running to my favorite local restaurant to order a carryout order of onion rings. Luckily I regained some self-control, lol. So, I went surfing the internet for some onion ring recipes. I came across The Pioneer Woman’s Onion String Recipe. The recipe looked as though it would really cure my craving.

I usually call them onion straws. I guess others call them onion strings. Whatever you call them, I am sure you know the slight addiction that these fried onions can cause. I figured I would make a batch and all I can say is wow! They are so good but so very addicting. I convinced one of my boys to give them a try. Remember… this boy really hates onions. After he tried one, he was addicted too. Everyone in the house was amazed that he actually tried them and liked them. This was quite a large batch that I made and I think he ate half and I ate the other half. CRAZY! I am so happy that he may overcome his fear of onions.

I did change up the recipe a bit. I did not have any Cayenne Pepper on hand so I used a simple chili powder and it was absolutely perfect. I used two large vidalia onions. If you have a mandoline slicer, it slices the onions so very nice and thin. That is the key to this Homemade Onion Strings Recipe… very very thin onions. They cook so quickly so be prepared with your paper towel lined plate. We dipped in ketchup but feel free to dip in whatever dipping you enjoy. Put them on your burgers, your casseroles (perfect for homemade green bean casserole), or just enjoy them as is.

  1. My sister made these today and they were AWESOME!! She tweaked by adding Creole seasoning. Soooo flavorful and addicting. We had on top of sloppy joes and then by themselves. The whole family from the 6 year old to the 82 year old LOVED them! I will be making this weekend to top my southwest BBQ chicken salad.
