Caramel Apple Poke Cake

Poke cakes make for a super easy and delish dessert. We normally make poke cakes in the summer, our Boston Cream Poke Cake has been a huge hit. Since I had a few cake mixes and apple pie filling on hand, a poke cake was in order. I spotted some easy Pillsbury Caramel frosting at Target while school shopping last week. I knew it would make for a perfect frosting on top of this apple yumminess.

I was spot on. I heated the frosting for just a few minutes and it was perfectly pourable. I served this cake up for dessert on Wednesday evening and everyone really liked it. The hubby even enjoyed seconds. The flavors of fall in a poke cake…perfect.

The layers of apple and caramel were perfect. Not too much apple. not too much caramel.

This recipe is so super simple since I used store bought cake mix, canned frosting, and also canned apple pie filling. You could also use Homemade Apple Pie Filling! It comes together in a jiffy!

  1. I cannot find caramel frosting and was wondering if anyone can recommend any substitute frosting flavor that would still taste good? pleaseee

  2. Made this Carmel Apple poke cake for a birthday party at work. It was all gone, everyone seemed to love it. I thought it was good but a little sweet, since I could not find Carmel frosting I made my own. It didn’t cover the Apple pie filling thick like it shows in the picture. But it was enjoyed anyway.

  3. I’m about to make this for the second time. The first time I made it,like the commenter above, it was soggy, and way sweet! I used a spice cake mix then, and will use it again. But this time, I’m going to use a 3.4 oz. box of Jello caramel pudding instead of the sweetened condensed milk. This time I actually have salted caramel frosting to use as opposed to the caramel sauce I used the last time. That probably aided in the sogginess the first go around. The cake was delicious, but hoping it’ll be a bigger success this time.

  4. Unfortunately it appears Pillsbury has discontinued this frosting. I have searched high and low for it for the past year with no luck, finally resorting to trying to order it online. Amazon has it listed for about $58 plus shipping. For one can. :(

  5. I made this cake and It was a soggy mess. I’m guessing people that had success with it didn’t do the filling and the icing in separate 7 hour stages like the recipie calls for. I think it would have been much better if I had of put the filling and the icing on in the same step

  6. Good morning, What a delicious recipe to open my email up to this morning. I just love this time of year and using fresh apples. I have a question, what can I substitute the sweetened condensed milk with to lower the sugar content of this recipe. I think it would be too sweet for me but it does look so good.
    Thank you

  7. Made it for my boyfriends thanksgiving dinner (canadian) and it was a hit! Thanks for the great recipe :)
I’ll definitely be doing it again.

  8. Hello! I don’t have nutmeg and I was wondering if the poke cake could be done without it (since I’m not a fan) . Also, Could it be done the day before for a dinner or should I do it the day of?

    thanks!

  9. I live in a small area and our local Walmart’s don’t carry the Caramel frosting:( What could I use as a substitute?

    1. Hi Courtney! Now that fall has arrived, you could check your grocery store. I noticed in my Kroger yesterday that they have a salted caramel frosting available. It may be available year round. Give that a try:)

  10. I have made this before and actually baked the apple pie filling into the cake!! It makes a great apple cake with delicious frosting!

  11. I made the Caramel Apple Poke cake using Betty Crocker’s Gluten Free yellow cake mixes (used 2 since 1 only makes one 8 inch layer). It was well worth making. Everyone loved it. TFS
