Candy Apple Pie

If you like Candy Apples you are going to LOVE this Candy Apple Pie Recipe I am sharing with you today. Candy Apples are one of my favorite foods (reminds me of my childhood trips to the carnivals and fairs). When I was making my Cinnamon Red Hot Cupcakes the other day a thought came to mind. The thought of making a candied apple type pie. For some reason pie has been sounding good lately. The Red Hots are great for scoring that cinnamon flavoring.
Candy Apple Pie
I had a few pie crusts left over that I purchased on a sale and really didn’t have the extra time to make a crust from scratch. I ran to Target and grabbed some quick and easy canned apple pie filling to combine with the pie crusts and red hots I had on hand. I was like a child scurrying to get back home and make this yummy pie I had on my mind.
INGREDIENTS
2 refrigerated Pie Crust Dough sheets
2 cans Apple Pie Filling
3 oz Red Hot candy
1/4 cup Water
6 drops Red Food Coloring
Sanding Sugar (for top of pie)
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 375.
Combine 2 oz of Red Hots and water in saucepan over low heat until most of the red hots are dissolved.
Combine apple pie filling and red hot mixture in a large bowl and stir to combine.
Place one sheet of pie dough in bottom of pie pan.
Pour filling into the pie crust.
Top with remaining Red Hots.
Using a pastry cutter or knife cut other pie crust into strips.
Basket weave the strips to form a lattice top. Trim and crimp around edges.
Sprinkle with sanding sugar.
Bake for 40 minutes. If the edges of your pie are getting too brown before the center is browned, cover edges with aluminum foil.
Allow to cool before serving.
There something about the yumminess and spice of a candy apple that I just love! I considered tossing in some nuts but wanted to make sure I had enough flavor inside the pie. I think this is a perfect pie for Valentine’s Day and GREAT for some July 4th picnics this summer (will it ever get here? ha ha).
Oh no! Now I am daydreaming about summer grill outs, lol. Is it really only February? Ok… back to the pie. If you are looking to make a yummy pie, this is one to try. You could make this one from scratch with a homemade pie crust and sliced apples (I am considering doing so next time I make this one). But I really liked how easy this was to toss together.
