Easy French Dip Sandwiches
I like to share our quick and easy dinner ideas here on our blog. Earlier this week, I shared our Easy Turkey Sandwiches because those are one of our favorite quick and easy meals.
I am not one for making meals that take too much prep or cooking attention. That’s why this recipe for Easy French Dip Sandwiches is one of our favorite meals.
I just drop by the deli and find the rarest roast beef available because it is perfect for making french dips. If you are in Cincinnati, Remke has a great rare roast beef that tastes AMAZING!
We are a family that always has a habit of choosing the same sides each and every time with our go-to dishes. With our Easy French Dip Sandwiches, I make simple potato wedges. I can toss them in the oven when I am preparing our sandwiches and they are ready when we are.
I use whichever hoagie rolls I can locate but we prefer a tougher bread so sometimes I will just grab a loaf and slice it up to make the perfect sized hoagie sandwiches. Softer bread doesn’t always work best when dipping in the homemade au jus. If you plan to make these, be sure to keep that in mind when selecting your bread.
Traditional French Dip Sandwiches quite often call for Swiss Cheese. My hubby is not a big fan of Swiss so we use provolone. You can use whichever cheese you prefer.
The au jus is perfect for dipping your big ‘ol sandwiches. The beef flavor is there but not terribly strong. The consistency is perfect. I make one sandwich for each of us and pour the au jus into dipping bowls. I keep our onions on the side because we have a couple of picky kids who refuse onions.

Add Worcestershire and remaining broth and bring to a boil.

Split rolls and toast lightly.
Add beef to pan and allow to warm for 5 minutes.
Place beef on bottoms of rolls.
Top each with sauteed onions.
Cover each with 2 slices of cheese.
Place in oven for several minutes to melt cheese.

I’ve made this recipe many times and it’s delicious, I love the dipping sauce. I use deli roast beef and it makes for such an easy dinner. Thanks!!
So good! I used Swiss instead of provolone. Highly recommend

Where did you buy the bread that is shown in your pictures? I am from the Cincinnati area. Those hoagie buns look better than the ones I see at the store.
Hi Emily! It is so difficult to find good hoagie or sup rolls here in the Cincy area. I have been using the Kroger Take and Bake for years. They are the closest thing I have found to a traditional Philly cheesesteak style bun. They crunch up a bit and are not too b”bready”. I hope that helps.
Love this recipe it’s a family favorite I add French onion soup with mine having three kids and two elderly and my husband and myself it’s nice to make a meal everyone likes and that’s easy on time!
You say in the headline that you can make this in the instant pot. Where are those directions????
So good so easy and feeling must make again
Hello how would I go about storing the leftovers? Roast beef and au jus separated or together?
Hi Katie! I am sure you could store them together. I have never had any leftovers when makign this one so I have yet to try it. be sure to let us know if you give it ago. Hope that helps- Jen
What temperature do you set the oven?
@Belinda
This reply is probably months too late, but just put the sandwiches (open face) under the broiler for a few minutes to melt the cheese. I also preheat the oven to 450F and toast the bread face down with a small amount of EVOO brushed on.
As soon as I saw that pic I thought “Wow, I bet they used deli roast beef! What a clever idea!” And sure enough you did. My teenage boys will absolutely love this. Thanks!
Great French dip recipe we loved it!
Is it possible to do this without the onions?
Hi Melissa! You sure can. Enjoy!
The sandwiches turned out really good and we will definitely be making this again!
How in the heck do you make it so the flour doesn’t just clump ?!? Thank so good besides that !!
Remove onions from skillet, leaving remaining butter in pan. Set onions aside.
Add flour to pan and 1-2 tablespoons of beef broth and scrape and stir to make a paste.
Add more oil or butter between these steps. It is clumping because there is not enough fat in your pan to make a roux.
How many servings does this make?
Salt is listed in ingredients but I don’t see it in the directions. Please advise.
Tried this last night it was delicious… added half a can of beer to the broth mixture! We will be having this again thanks for the recipe!
Oh my gosh these sandwiches look amazing! Pinned. Thank you for sharing at Merry Monday!
