The key to making this homemade Arby’s Roast Beef is the meat.. of course. Since we are trying to save, we purchase Hillshire Farms Ultra Thin Roast Beef. It’s the meat that comes the closest to the shaved roast beef that Arby’s uses.

Copycat Arby’s Roast Beef Sandwich Ingredients

You might be shocked to see such few ingredients but you really don’t need many to make a good Arby’s Roast Beef Sandwich Copycat! It’s more important that you pick out the right kind of meat- we touch on that down below- but this is just a 3 ingredient recipe, really. Here’s all you’re going to need:

Copycat Arby's Roast Beef Sandwich Ingredients
  • Au Jus Gravy Mix – This is the secret stuff that helps add flavor that is closer to Arby’s Roast Beef recipe. You’ll also need some water to mix it with. For extra beef flavor, consider using some beef stock or beef broth instead of water.
  • Hamburger Buns – Sesame seed buns are what Arby’s uses for their Classic Roast beef Sandwiches.
  • Roast Beef – Some nice shaved deli roast beef is great. However, something off-the-shelf like this Hillshire Farm roast beef will works best to achieve the Arby’s texture. It’s VERY ultra thin. For reference, Arby’s uses 3 oz of Roast Beef per Classic Sandwich.

Making this Arby’s Roast Beef recipe right is all about the process- but don’t worry, this is so easy! Once the au jus is ready and the buns are toasted, you’ll be ready to make some quick roast beef sandwiches. Here’s what you’re going to do:

  • Combine au jus gravy packet and water in a small pot on the stovetop. Prepare according to package instructions and keep warm over low heat. For the best roast beef sandwiches, you’ll want to toast your buns.

  • Set buns on a baking sheet and open them up. Set them up so the insides are facing upwards.

  • Set baking sheet under a low broiler and toast them to preference. Once buns have finished toasting, pull from the oven and set aside. To prepare roast beef, briefly dip in warm au jus gravy. Do not leave in the pan longer than just a “dip” or you will overcook the meat. It will be crusty and dried out if it is actually cooked.

  • Shake and let any excess liquid drip off before piling onto toasted buns. Repeat for the rest of your sandwiches. Save the Au Jus if your family likes to use it for dipping.

Storage / Freezing

Storage: Considering this recipe is a very “on the spot” kind of recipe, there really isn’t a way to store your leftovers. Buns will get soggy or the meat might dry out. We recommend enjoying your Copycat Arby’s Roast Beef Sandwich right away and avoid leaving any leftovers.

Freezing: If you really want to, you can try keeping your Arby’s Roast Beef frozen. Let as much excess au jus gravy drip off the meat as possible before piling onto your buns and adding your top bun. Wrap your sandwiches tightly in aluminum foil before putting in the freezer for 1-2 months. Keep wrapped in the foil when you reheat in a 350 degree oven for 20-30 minutes.
