There’s plenty of sweet potato casseroles on the internet but we wanted to mix things up a little bit so we made some Mashed Sweet Potatoes! These are an interesting seasonal variation on classic mashed potatoes that are just as- if not more- delicious. Rather than just subbing in the sweet potatoes for the regular ones, we add a few other sweet ingredients to play off those sweet potato flavors.

How to make Mashed Sweet Potatoes

The first order of business is prepping our sweet potatoes for the pot. Peel your potatoes and then chop them down to about 1 to 1-1/2 inch chunks.

Cubed sweet potatoes

With those chopped, transfer them to a large stock pot. Cover those with water, put on the stovetop over high heat, and bring to a boil. Allow those to boil until tender or about 10 minutes.

Cubed potatoes in water

Drain the water off those potatoes and return them to the pot. Drop in your butter and mash the potatoes with something like a hand-masher. Mash close to your desired consistency and then set aside.

Adding butter to sweet potatoes

The next thing we need to deal with is our heavy cream and maple syrup. Mix those together in a microwave-safe bowl and then pop it into the microwave for a minute. Once out of the nuker, stir- if the mixture isn’t warm at this point, put it back in for another minute and stir again.

Warmed cream and maple syrup

While gradually pouring in the maple-cream mixture, continue mashing your potatoes. Continue mashing until you reach your desired smoothness.

Adding cream mixture to mashed potatoes

Once all the maple-cream mixture has been added, toss in your salt, pepper, and half of your bacon- finely chopped. Stir that in before optionally transferring to a separate serving dish.

When it comes time to serve your potatoes, top with an additional pat of butter and garnish with the rest of your bacon and some chopped chives. Serve to your hungry waiting guests and enjoy!
