Pigs in a Blanket

During the holidays and for game day, we like to serve appetizers when we have get-togethers. Sometimes I will make Slow Cooker Party Meatballs, Pulled Pork Sliders, or even a Cherry Cheesecake Dip. Recipes that are simple and quick to make are always best when attempting to serve a crowd. This Pigs in a Blanket recipe is so easy, and everyone gobbles them up.

“Everything Bagel” seasoning has been a craze lately. Have you heard of it? It’s the seasoning you typically find on top of bagels. It’s not just for bagels anymore, though. Many are using it to top many different foods, and I now know why. This seasoning is so gosh darn good!

The “Everything Bagel” seasoning can be bought at many different stores now, premixed and ready to use. I prefer to make a batch of homemade because it only requires a small number of ingredients.

Mini crescent dogs have always been a favorite appetizer for my family. Crescent wrapped hot dogs are kid and adult-friendly. They are super tasty with an everyday egg wash, but when you make Everything Bagel Pigs in a Blanket, you take them to another level.

I used Hillshire Farms Lil Wieners for our pigs in a blanket. You could use full-sized or cut hot dogs. Consider using Lil Smokies they work too! If using miniature versions, they make for an easy finger food appetizer.

Store-bought crescents are so simple and usually on sale about every other week. I have never made homemade but, I am sure if you have a recipe, it will work equally as well. Homemade will require a bit more time, though.

For the “everything” seasoning, you can check your spice drawer or cabinet. I have all of the seasonings except for garlic flakes on hand. Locating garlic flakes at my Kroger has been a failure. So, I use garlic powder instead — the taste results in the same flavor profile.

How to make Pigs in a Blanket

First, place crescent rolls in the freezer for about 10 minutes. Do not leave them much longer as they will freeze and be unworkable.
Then, place the mini hot dogs, wieners, or smokies on a paper towel and with another towel until VERY dry. Soaking up the moisture will result in a crispier Pig in a Blanket. Now, preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Next, place all of the “Everything” seasoning ingredients in a small bowl and mix. Add the egg and water to another small bowl or dish. Beat until combined and set aside.

For the next step, you will need to unroll the crescent dough carefully. Place them on a work surface and cut each triangle into three pieces. I use a pizza cutter, but a knife works too! Keep from touching the dough to a minimum. Fingers will transfer heat and make the dough less workable.

Sliced Crescent dough

Place a hot dog, little Wiener, or smokie into each triangle and roll. I trim some of the excess dough to keep the meat “peeking” through the ends. Place on an ungreased baking sheet.

With a pastry brush, coat the tops of each pig in a blanket with egg wash.

Then, sprinkle each with the prepared everything seasoning. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown tops and edges have appeared. Serve warm, with mustard or your favorite dipping sauce.

If you need to make the mini crescent dogs ahead of time, prepare the dough and dogs and place them on the sheet pan. Keep them covered with plastic wrap and refrigerate until almost the time to serve. Then, add the egg wash and seasoning just before baking.

These Everything Pigs in a Blanket are perfect for game day food, a Christmas, or New Years’ Eve Appetizer. I promise they will be a hit for your parties!
