Our Casserole Ingredients

  • Green Beans – We used fresh beans in ours, but you could also use frozen green beans as well! Canned green beans might even work too- it could make the cooking time a bit quicker.
  • Cream of Mushroom Soup – Campbell’s is the classic choice here.
  • Fried Onions – Can’t go wrong with French’s!
  • Milk

Ingredients for Green Bean Casserole

How to make Green Bean Casserole

If using fresh or frozen green beans, you’ll want to start this recipe by first prepping your beans. Wash them and remove any stems before boiling for 20-25 minutes. If you’re using canned beans, you can skip the boiling step.

Boiled green beans

Once you’ve boiled those, we can start making our casserole filling. In a mixing bowl, combine your drained green beans, cream of mushroom, and your milk.

Cream of Mushroom Soup and salt and pepper added to beans

Before we put this in our casserole dish, we’re going to mix some of our onions in. We’ll add about 3 ounces worth of our fried onions and stir them into the casserole filling.

Fried Onions added to green bean mixture

Now we bake! Put your casserole into a 350 degree oven and allow to cook for 30 minutes. If using canned green beans, you can cut that cook time in half.

Once that initial cook time is through, we’re going to top our casserole with another 3 ounces worth of onions and let bake a bit longer. It should only take 5-10 minutes for those onions to get nice and crispy! Let cool for a few minutes before scooping out a serving and enjoying!

Can you make Green Bean Casserole ahead of time?

It’s fairly easy to make this casserole ahead of time. For that, first, mix up your casserole filling and add it to the casserole dish. Instead of immediately tossing it into the oven, you can instead wrap your casserole filling with plastic and keep in the fridge. Prep your filling the night before and when it’s almost time to eat, pull the casserole from the fridge and follow the recipe where you left off!

  1. I like to add a couple of shakes of Worcestershire sauce to the recipe to give it a little extra flavor.

  2. This is how i usually make it and its so good! Never made it ahead of time, this year im having a lot more people than usual so im trying to plan ahead. How early can you make ahead of time? And should you leave out the French’s fried onions? Thanks!

I just made this, and one batch didn’t make enough for Thanksgiving, so I recommend doubling this, especially if you are making it for a crowd.
